Handprinted fabrics with inspiration from Provence

These fabrics became very popular in France during the 1700 century when trade with India was at it´s peak. The Indian fabrics had beautiful, exotic patterns and were made entierly by hand. In France people started copying these fabrics which resulted in the famous Provence fabrics. The Provence fabrics became copies of the, at the time, more expensive  ”Indiennes”.

The fabrics are made using ancient methods that are called "Kalamkari". Fabric is only printed with natural dyes that comes from different plants and are made from pure cotton. The prints are made by hand using wooden pieces in which the pattern has been carved out.

To make these fabics is time consuming, it takes about 15 different procedures and treatments and 45 days for the fabrics to be ready. During this process the fabrics are boiled several times and left in the sun to bleach naturally. The fabrics are treated with different substances from fruits and pips in order to make the prints colour prooof. It is impossible to copy the quality of these fabrics. They all bare trases from the process. Every piece of fabric is unique and has the same feeling as a fabric that has been hidden in a closet for a very long time.
